About 'O' Levels
'O' Levels Examinations - A key examination for students in Singapore which takes place at the end of their 4/5 years secondary school education. In the final year prior to the 'O' Levels, we therefore offer a comprehensive programme targeting on the various sections of the papers to adequately prepare the students to excel in the exam.
Important Dates
In lieu of the examination dates for Chinese Language O Levels Examinations, preparation for the O Levels Examinations should start no later than December in the prior year. This is to ensure that there is sufficient time for the effective tutoring and preparation for the subject.
July to August - Oral & Listening Comprehension Examination
October to November - Written Examination
Teaching Methods
Bilingual Teaching
With predominantly English speaking families in Singapore, the use of English to teach and explain difficult to understand Chinese vocabulary and content to students have proven effective for many students.
Building on Vocabulary and Idioms
Central to the effective learning of the Chinese language is to a strong focus on building on the recognition and understanding of Chinese vocabulary and idioms.
Holistic Learning
Learning of the Chinese language should be meaningful by developing the interest of the language through incorporation of cultural and current affairs elements into the lesson and promoting the use of the language effectively and efficiently in daily life.
Developing Key Examination Skills
Developing Language Application, Composition Writing, Oral and Listening Comprehension skills as well as Critical thinking skills to tackle the more challenging examination questions. Familiarisation of the examination paper format through mock exam practises to reduce examination anxiety and focus the mind on answering the examination questions.
O Levels Tuition Syllabus

A refinement of the various skills required for the Chinese Language O Levels Examination as well as Examination Tips!
Paper 1:
- Composition – Hone creative writing skills as well as organisational skills in elaboration and construction of introduction, body and conclusion of essay.
Paper 2:
- Cloze Passage – Analytical skill to assess and interpret the context and content of the passage provided and choosing the correct answer.
- Reading Comprehensions – Analytical and critical thinking skills in answering evaluative comprehension questions based on the theme of the passage.
Paper 3:
- Oral Conversation – Learn and practise how to have a meaningful conversation with the examiner based on a short video clip.
- Listening Comprehension – Learn and practise how to effectively identify key information from a recording to answer factual, summary and inferential questions.
All teaching materials, exercises, homework and mock exams are provided according to the level of the students.
Chinese Language O Levels Format

What to Expect?
Paper 1: Composition (Duration: 120 Mins) 60 Marks / 30% Weightage
Paper 1 consists of 2 sections and students are allowed to use an approved dictionary for this paper:
Section I:
Practical Composition (20 Marks)
Students are to choose and answer one out of the two questions provided with not less than 150 words. Students can choose to write either:
1) A reply email based on the content and context of an email provided; or
2) An email based on the materials provided.
Section II:
Composition (40 Marks)
Students are to choose and answer one out of three questions provided with not less than 300 words. Students can choose to write either:
- Narrative Essay; or
- Explanatory Essay; or
- Argumentative Essay.
Paper 2: Reading Comprehension & Application (90 Mins) 70 Marks / 35% Weightage
Paper 2 consists of 2 sections:
Section I:
Cloze Passage (10 Multiple Choice Questions 10 Marks)
Base on the content and context of the passage, students are to choose the most appropriate answer from the options provided to fill in the missing blanks within the passage.
Section II:
Reading Comprehension I (10 Multiple Choice Questions 20 Marks)
Base on the 3 to 4 passages (Including advertisements, leaflets, news report etc) provided, students are to read and answer questions relating to the passage by choosing from the options provided.
Section III:
Reading Comprehension II (10 Open Ended Questions 40 Marks)
Base on the 2 to 3 passages provided, students are to read and answer questions relating to the passages.
Paper 3: Oral & Listening Comprehension
Oral (Approximately 15 Mins) 50 Marks / 25% Weightage
Prior to the examination, students are given 10 minutes to silently read a passage and watch a short video clip as many times as they want within the stipulated time limit.
Thereafter, the student is to proceed to the examiner to read the short passage aloud (10 Marks) followed by a conversation based on the video clip (40 Marks) provided earlier.
Listening Comprehension (Approximately 30 minutes) 20 Marks / 10% Weightage
Students are to listen to recordings (Dialogues, advertisements, stories, news reports etc) and then answer 10 multiple choice questions relating to the recordings.
Higher Chinese Language O Levels Format

What to Expect?
Paper 1: Composition (Duration: 120 Mins) 80 Marks / 40% Weightage
Paper 1 consists of 2 sections and students are allowed to use an approved dictionary for this paper:
Section I:
Practical Composition (20 Marks)
Students are to choose and answer one out of the two questions provided with not less than 220 words. Students can choose to write either:
1) An email based on the materials provided; or
2) Express their opinions/comments on a topic (Including blog, forum etc.) provided.
Section II:
Composition (60 Marks)
Students are to choose and answer one out of three questions provided with not less than 500 words. Students can choose to write either:
1) Narrative Essay; or
2) Explanatory Essay; or
3) Argumentative Essay.
Paper 2: Reading Comprehension & Application (105 Mins) 80 Marks / 40% Weightage
Paper 2 consists of 4 sections:
Section I:
Cloze Passage (5 Multiple Choice Questions 10 Marks)
Base on the content and context of the passage, students are to choose the most appropriate answer from the options provided to fill in the missing blanks within the passage.
Word Correction (5 Open Ended Questions 10 Marks)
Base on the passage provided, students are to identify and correct the incorrectly written or applied words used in the passage.
Section II:
Reading Comprehension I (5 Multiple Choice / Open Ended Questions 10 Marks)
Base on the passage provided, students are to read and answer questions relating to the passage.
Section III:
Reading Comprehension II (9 Open Ended Questions 38 Marks)
Base on the 2 passages provided, students are to read and answer questions relating to the passages.
Section IV:
Summarise (1 Open Ended Questions 12 Marks)
Base on the 2 passages provided, students are to summarise the 2 passages with not more than 80 words.
Paper 3: Oral
Oral (Approximately 20 Mins) 40 Marks / 20% Weightage
Prior to the examination, students are given 10 minutes to watch a short video clip as many times as they want and also jot down key points within the stipulated time limit.
Thereafter, the student is to proceed to the examiner present an oral reporting of not more than 2 minutes based on the topic and video clip provided (20 Marks) followed by a discussion with the examiner based on the content of the oral report (20 Marks).
