Learning Objective

In line with the objective by MOE, we aim to develop a strong foundation in the Chinese Language by focusing on the 6 aspects of listening, speaking, reading, writing, oral interaction and written interaction skills. Armed with a strong foundation in the 6 aspects of the language, students should therefore be able to achieve the following goals and perform during tests and examinations:

  • Ability to understand the content of information presented in print and non-print media resources.
  • Ability to articulate and express clearly own’s emotions, experiences and opinions.
  • Ability to independently read and understand reading materials provided.
  • Ability to express own’s emotions and opinions using various writing methods and styles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and through written means; expressing own’s emotions and opinions as well as conveying information.
  • Ability to use the various language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing to communicate effectively with others.

Nonetheless, a large part of Chinese Language is the ability to recognise, understand and write Chinese words. Therefore, there will be a strong focus on this aspect in the Primary School syllabus as we aim to lay a strong foundation in the subject. Next will be the focus on developing the various skills and techniques required for the answering the different sections of the examination papers

 

Teaching Methods

Bilingual Teaching

With predominantly English speaking families in Singapore, the use of English to teach and explain difficult to understand Chinese vocabulary and content to students have proven effective for many students.

Building on Vocabulary and Idioms

Central to the effective learning of the Chinese language is to a strong focus on building on the recognition and understanding of Chinese vocabulary and idioms. In fact, students are required to be able to read up to 1,650 Chinese words and write up to 1,100 different Chinese words by Primary 6.

Holistic Learning

Learning of the Chinese language should be meaningful by developing the interest of the language through incorporation of cultural elements into the lesson and promoting the use of the language effectively and efficiently in daily life.

Developing Key Examination Skills

Developing Language Application, Composition Writing, Oral and Listening Comprehension skills as well as Critical thinking skills to tackle the more challenging examination questions. Familiarisation of the examination paper format through mock exam practises to reduce examination anxiety and focus the mind on answering the examination questions.

 

Pri 1 - 3 Tuition Syllabus

In order to lay a strong foundation in learning Chinese Language, the emphasis for Primary 1- 3 would be on developing the ability to (1) recognise, read and understand how to use as well as (2) ability to write commonly used Chinese words as per the List of Chinese Characters set by MOE:

  • Primary 1, students are required to recognise, read and know the meaning about 300 Chinese words and able to write about 150 Chinese words.
  • Primary 2, students are required to recognise, read and know the meaning about 650 Chinese words and able to write about 350 Chinese words.
  • Primary 3, students are required to recognise, read and know the meaning about 920 Chinese words and able to write about 580 Chinese words.

Concurrently, there will also be the focus on the writing strokes and phonics (hanyupinyin) before introducing sentence construction and paragraph writing.

All teaching materials, exercises, homework and mock exams are provided according to the level of the students.

Pri 4 - 6 Tuition Syllabus

Reinforcing on the foundation laid in Primary 1 – 3, continue to build on the student’s vocabulary of the Chinese words as per the List of Chinese Characters set by MOE:

  • Primary 4, students are required to recognise, read and know the meaning about 1,200 Chinese words and able to write about 750 Chinese words.
  • Primary 5, students are required to recognise, read and know the meaning about 1,470 Chinese words and able to write about 950 Chinese words.
  • Primary 6, students are required to recognise, read and know the meaning about 1,650 Chinese words and able to write about 1,100 Chinese words.

Additionally, in preparation for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), there will also be a comprehensive refinement of various Chinses Language skills, focusing on the following areas:

  • Comprehension - Understanding the content and context of passages and short essays followed by the answering of short questions.
  • Composition Writing - Organisational skills, elaboration and construction of introduction, body and conclusion.
  • Oral - Passage reading, pictorial and video conversation.
  • Listening Comprehension - Listening of passage and identifying key information to answer factual, summary and inferential questions.

All teaching materials, exercises, homework and mock exams are provided according to the level of the students.
